As the days turn cold, cosy layers become a key part of any nine-to-five look. NNT’s resident design expert, Ann Morgan, shares her advice on what to buy and how to wear it this season. It’s time to turn up the heat.
Q. Which knits make the smartest investments?
A. “I like the word investment when it comes knitwear because it should last a long time and be worn season after season. So, choosing classic pieces in timeless colours and shapes is key. For women, I suggest a cardigan because it’s easy to layer and can look smart but less formal than a jacket. For men, the Zip Neck Sweater is a classic shape and the neckline gives it an elevated look.”
Q. What materials are best for everyday wear?
A. “If you’re looking for the best quality, find a garment which contains Australian merino wool in its composition. Wool is naturally breathable – when it’s warm, the fibre absorbs moisture particles from the body and evaporates them outside of the fabric, keeping the wearer cool. When it’s cold, the moisture vapours condense inside the fabric, keeping you warm. In addition, wool is naturally odour resistant, crease resistant and quick drying. Along with these amazing properties, Australian merino is highly sought after throughout the world for its pure white colour and superior handle.”
Q. Knitwear is often viewed as a more relaxed option. How can you ensure it looks smart enough for work?
A. “When styling knitwear for a corporate environment, keeping shapes simple and elegant is the easiest way to maintain a sharp look. For example, pairing a simple sweater with tailored pants, an understated tee or top and beautiful shoes can work for both men and women.”
Q. For those in a physically demanding role, what styles do you suggest?
A. “The wool acrylic styles such as the V-Neck Cardigan for women and V-Neck Sweater for men are great choices. The classic designs look professional and elegant while the blend of merino wool and acrylic in this yarn provides warmth, comfort and durability - perfect when you’re working hard.”
Q. Let’s talk colour. Is black always the best option for work knits?
A. “Black is a good choice because it’s easy to maintain and looks fashionable, but often needs to be worn with a light or bright colour – especially for on-screen meetings. Black absorbs light so it can make the wearer appear washed out on a Teams or Zoom call. Navy is universally flattering for lots of skin tones and can be easily paired with other colours like red, emerald, purple, white and light blue, making it super versatile and easy to wear.”
Q. What is the smartest way to care for your knitwear to ensure longevity and freshness?
A. “Its’s best to wash on the wool cycle in your front loader washing machine or do a cool hand wash in the laundry tub with wool approved detergent. Look for the Woolmark symbol on the bottle. The soap should be rinsed out thoroughly – any soap suds stuck in the fibre can cause the fabric to look matted. Lay your garment flat on a towel and roll it up to absorb any excess moisture, then let it dry flat (keeping any pets away!).”
Q. What is your personal favourite NNT knit for men and women?
A. “As an avid yarn lover and hand knitter, I personally love fine merino wool for its drape, lustre and superior handle. So, for women, I really like the Detail Cardigan in black – it feels lovely on the skin and has an interesting diagonal stitch detail near the hem. My favourite men’s item is the Zip Neck Jumper in dark charcoal. It looks very fashionable in the melange yarn and has a lovely soft feel.”
Q. Finally, which piece will you be wearing on repeat this season?
A. “I like the simplicity of a classic black cardigan, in Australian merino wool of course! As a creative, I don’t need to look corporate every day, so I might wear this with an old Nom D t-shirt and mannish pants, finished with my clomp-y boots which I’m currently obsessed with.”
